Rugged handhelds gain major wireless carrier
Jun. 21, 2007

An industrial-strength handheld computer made by Psion Teklogix is now usable on AT&T's BroadbandConnect and EDGE wireless networks. The Workabout Pro is powered by Windows CE 5.0 or 6.0, and offers built-in barcode and RFID scanning, GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi capabilities, among other features.

AT&T says its 3G BroadbandConnect network -- currently offered in more than 165 major metropolitan areas across the U.S. -- can sustain average downlink speeds of 400 to 700 Kbps with bursts exceeding 1 Mbps, and offers uplink speeds of up to 384 Kbps. When outside the BroadbandConnect coverage area, service seamlessly reverts to AT&T's widely available EDGE network, according to the company.
