A new wireless headset to be made by foneGEAR uses an enhanced form of near field magnetic communication developed by Aura Communications, rather than conventional radio frequency technology, which is said to result in reduced power consumption and cost.
The companies claim that the foneGEAR headset's use of magnetic signals creates a "secure communication bubble that surrounds and is uniquely owned by each user for reliable and private communications." Additionally, the headset is said to achieve up to 25 hours of talk time and 3 months of standby power using a single AA alkaline battery.
The target price for the headset will be in the range of $60 to $80, whereas Bluetooth wireless headsets tyipcally sell for $149 or more, the companies say.
Initial shipments of the headset are expected by the end of 2003.
