Inferno enters the realm of Grid Computing
Nov. 06, 2003

Vita Nuova says it has added support for Grid Computing to the Inferno operating system. Inferno now provides distributed computation, job scheduling, Grid monitoring, and process coordination for Windows, Linux, and UNIX platforms, and Web browsers can be used for remote access and control, the company says.

According to Vita Nuova, the new Grid application services apply Inferno's novel approach to building distributed systems which was invented at Bell Labs and has been used in large-scale commercial distributed systems.

Vita Nuova CEO Michael Jeffrey says "Grids need not be as difficult to design, implement and maintain as some other grid technologies make them appear to users and programmers. Grids are distributed systems. We looked carefully at the application functionality provided by Grid technologies, and found much of it straightforward to implement with Inferno. We have applied Inferno's general approach to building distributed systems to this specific application area. The speed and ease with which we have created a competitive Grid solution emphasises the importance of starting with the right design and the right set of tools. We believe we have the potential to be very successful in Grid computing."

Vita Nuova says it is targeting the life and bio-science companies amongst others for whom the management of their computation resources is an important challenge. The company expects to see more general application of its Grid technology in the area of Data Grids and Instrument Grids in years to come.

A collection of Grid demonstrations is available on the company's website that illustrates how Inferno can be used to access resources such as computation, services, data, and devices that are distributed around the network. Inferno is available as a free download for noncommercial uses, and may be licensed for commercial purposes.

According to Vita Nuova, Inferno was originally created and developed at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs within the Software Sciences Research Group -- the same group that created the UNIX operating system and C programming language -- and is now developed and marketed by Vita Nuova. The OS is highly portable and can run on top of other operating systems or standalone on bare hardware, is well suited to the construction of distributed systems involving heterogeneous collections of computers and environments.
